Brief History and Facts
Buff is a type of headwear that was designed by Joan Rojas back in 1991 to protect his face and neck when he was motorbiking cross-country. He had a bit of knowledge in tubular knitting and he applied that to his ever Buff.
Ever since then this has been the number one brand used by athletes to prevent sweat and burns caused by the heat during any of their activities.
In 2019 Pau Capell, a Spanish athlete who recently won the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc (UTMB), is a Buff athlete using the neck gaiter from start to finish in the entire 171 kilometers. He finished the race strong and his face and neck were definitely protected as he did not have any injuries at all.
Buff takes pride in being the perfect accessory in any outdoor activity that you would want to do.
I personally recommend using it while exercising as I noticed that my body feels cooler after a workout.
What is Buff Multifunctional Headwear?
Buff falls under the category of neck gaiters, which can be used to protect your neck from the heat of the sun but can also be used to cover the face from dust or dirt. Buff is one of the first brands to launch multifunctional neck gaiters with added features such as ultraviolet ray protection or even using cooling technology on their fabrics.
I have had my Buff for more than 5 years now and I can say that it is durable and that it’s worth every cent I spent on it. It is called multifunctional because it can be worn in different styles making it the most versatile accessory you own.
Best Features of Buff
I’d like to share some of the best features of owning a Buff. As I have had mine for years, I can say that it is one of the best things I’ve ever gotten for myself. Not only has it been with me for years, but it has also protected my face during hikes. Here are the best features of having a Buff:
1. Sun Protection feature
Outdoor activities are usually under the sun and sometimes using sunblock just doesn’t cut it. Buff has a UV protection feature in some of its designs so you won’t get burnt plus it’s so light it feels like a second skin.
One of the best qualities of any Buff that you’ll get is that it is extremely easy to pack, it’s made of lightweight materials. You can also opt to not pack it and wear it as a wrist band or even use it as a ponytail scrunchie.
Buff is not your ordinary neck gaiter. There are some that come in plain and neutral colors but there are also ones that are very colorful and can be used as a splash of color to your outfit.
This headwear guarantees to give you comfort due to its seamless design so you won’t feel any itch or discomfort with prolonged wear. It also uses sublimation printing so the design doesn’t change the fabric at all. So you get a stylish headwear that is also soft and comfortable to wear.
5. Sweat-wicking Fabric
Buffs are made of microfiber, a piece of lightweight fabric that dries fast. So wearing one while doing any activity would not be a problem as it keeps the sweat from your face and at the same time dries fast so you won’t feel any added weight to your headwear.
Pros of using a Buff:
As you will read this article you will discover the many ways you can wear your Buff. It is called a multifunctional for a reason. I have tried more than 10 ways to wear mine and it has been a creative process for me.
Buff is made out of microfiber so it very lightweight and comfortable on the skin. I have very sensitive skin and most fabrics make me itch especially when I sweat. I am happy I discovered this brand and that I have never experienced any itchiness when using it.
I have had mine for many years and the quality is amazing. I will definitely get a new one soon but I can still alternate and use my old one when I need to.
Cons of using a Buff:
There are many rave reviews on Buff but I think there is still some room to improve. Mine has had no problems so far, but I did a lot of research and found many Buff users have only one problem — sagging.
The fabric loses its elasticity and sags/slides into a neckerchief when worn as a bandana or a cap. Overall I think this is a minor problem because reviews said that it’s after using their Buffs for a long time, which means that it takes a lot of time for natural wear-and-tear to set in.
How to use Buff Headwear
Buffs are fun to use because not only do you discover amazing ways to wear it but also you have more stylish ways to protect yourself while doing any activity. Check out the different ways you can wear your Buff below:
This type of mask covers the top of the head and the mouth, it is similar to a ski mask. Bikers often wear this under their helmets to protect themselves from wind or when it gets too cold.
You can wear your Buff as a cap as a stylish accessory to your outfit or wear it to protect your head from the sun.
Do Rags or Durags has its origins from women’s headwraps. These wraps were worn to keep curls, braids, or even dreadlocks in order. Nowadays, it can still have the same purpose or it can also keep your hair from getting in your face during any activity, especially if it’s windy.
Cover your nose and mouth with your Buff to prevent dust inhalation. Although it is lightweight, folding it twice can provide basic protection especially when you’re outside in a very smoky street or area.
You can opt to wear your buff in a pirate bandana style to keep your hair from getting on

A foulard is similar to a do-rag but it has a knot at the tail that keeps a ponytail in place. Unlike the do-rag, it’s more secure and is used to keep tied hair in place.
Did you lose your scrunchie? Or did you forget it at home? Worry not as your Buff can be folded and used as a hair tie.
Some people like to run or go out with their hair down. Unfortunately, if it becomes very windy it can be a bit problematic to keep your hair in place. Use your Buff to keep your hair neat and keep sweat from dripping down your face.
Love hats? Well using your buff can be a stylish accessory to your hat collection, not only does it add color, but it can also protect your hat from damage caused by sweat.
This was the original purpose of why Buff was invented. Use yours to protect your neck from burns caused by the sun. It can also help avoid skin allergies or rashes caused by sweat.
You can use your buff to protect your head from the heat or cold by covering up using your buff. You can use this while biking or when it gets extremely windy.
This is more of a stylish way to wear a buff more than anything. It makes a cap that has a tail, in the end, making you look chic and stylish.
Don’t confuse this with the hairband as this goes on your forehead and is used mainly to stop sweating from getting in your eyes.
Use your buff to cover the back of your neck while wearing a cap. Neck burns can be very painful and uncomfortable. I have learned the hard way and I’m glad that I now use this style whenever it gets too hot during a hike.
You can wear your Buff around your wrist while you let your hair down or you can even use it to wipe sweat during a run as it dries fast and won’t really smell bad after due to the fabric.
Can I Beat Excessive Sweating with Buff?
Sweating a lot is normal when you exercise. Your body has this function to make sure your body temperature is regulated. Although Buff can keep away the sweat from getting in your eyes while keeping your hair neat, it cannot help in reducing sweat at all.
There are many factors in beating sweat and using Buff is one of them. Now you don’t have to worry about the sweat from your head but you must be worried about how to beat sweat on other parts of your body.
We have now discovered that there are so many different and creative ways of protecting our face and neck while keeping the sweat at bay. My name is Oscar and I am the founder and director of Stop-Sweating-Now.com and have been researching and writing about hyperhidrosis for many years.
I have been sweating excessively for the better part of my life. I looked for solutions for well over a decade, but I never found anything that lasted.
It all started when I was around 14 years of age, when I suddenly found out that I was sweating more in my armpits than I should. At first I thought it was something that would go away soon, but I was wrong.
I had given up hope and accepted to live the rest of my life being embarrassed with ugly sweat stains in my armpits.
However, after a few years of not searching for any solutions anymore, I gave it another shot. And I found what finally gave me the freedom I had longed for so many years.
After finding a solution to my problem, I decided it was important to shout out my message to those that are suffering from what I had lived with so many years.
My goal is to help people find their freedom from sweating by sharing my expertise because hyperhidrosis is an underdiagnosed condition.
People don’t know that it is a medical term and can be treated effectively.
That is why I am here: Sharing with you what I know, what works and what does not work.
