What is Night Sweats and What Causes Them?
Night sweats is a condition characterized by sweating in the middle of the night. it is important to take note though, that night sweats are NOT caused by a warm sleeping environment. So you must check the thermostat first before thinking that you might have this condition. In some people, merely changing the temperature solves their problem.
You may have heard of the term “true night sweats” which now makes you wonder if there’s such a thing as “fake” when it comes to sweating at night. Don’t worry, I will explain what experts mean by true night sweats and why the term came about.
There are actually many causes of night sweats, which makes it fall under secondary or generalized hyperhidrosis but while reading, I found out that it’s not always the case and by ruling out several causes, night sweats can actually be a form of primary hyperhidrosis.
Below I will explain the different medical conditions that may cause night sweats:
1. Hormone Shifts
Being the most common cause of night sweats, hormone shifts are not only experienced by teenagers during puberty but are also experienced by middle-aged men and women going through menopause and andropause. This life stage is characterized by depleted hormone production that affects the body’s temperature regulators, which causes one to feel suddenly hot that triggers a sweat response.
After all, sweating is the body’s way to regulate heat, the problem is your body gets lots of mixed signals during menopause. You probably heard about the term “hot flashes” as this is what doctors call these warm episodes. when they happen at night, they are called night sweats.
A solution given to people experiencing hot flashes is usually hormone therapy, which supplies the lack of hormones produced by their bodies. This reduces the sweating episodes by a huge margin but in the long run, they really have to go through these symptoms until they subside (when menopause or andropause runs its course).
2. Infections
Different infections trigger the body’s fight responses. This usually comes out as a fever, which means your body temperature spikes up at dangerous levels, and to protect itself, it triggers a sweat response. That is why I often tell people that our bodies are naturally intelligent and that the different functions we may not notice are actually there for a reason, sweating being one of them.
As much as we hate the icky feeling of sweat, it can also be a sign that there’s something wrong. For example, infections like tuberculosis and osteomyelitis can be characterized by chills and fever aside from all the sweating. If you have any abscesses or wounds, that may also trigger a sweat response as your body is fighting an infection. It would be best if you go to a doctor so he/she may prescribe medication to address the illness.
Always remember, although Paracetamol can do the trick, it is always best to treat the underlying issue (or infection in this case). Get rid of the infection, get rid of the sweats. This is why night sweats caused by infections are considered secondary hyperhidrosis, as it is caused by another medical condition (such as most of the items in this list).
3. Cancer
Cancer is somehow an infection but I decided to give it its own section to explain things better. The difference between cancer and the other infections your body goes through is that night sweats (or excessive sweating in general) is not the only symptom when you have this disease.
Cancer is characterized by sudden weight loss, fatigue, chills, and excessive sweating. The best way to address the situation is to go to your doctor and get all the necessary tests you’ll need for a diagnosis, then get whatever treatment plan your doctor recommends.
Please take note that although cancer is a scary thing to have, the advancement of science has made the survival rate higher each year. Be positive and get your consultation for the best doctors in the field.
4. Hyperthyroidism
Considered to be a hormone disorder as well, did you know that hyperthyroidism can cause nocturnal sweating? Well, upon reading, I decided to make a separate section from menopause or andropause-related hormone shifts because I really like explaining things better.
Hyperthyroidism is actually common among women than in men, with the age being directly proportional to the numbers. the older one gets (especially over 70) the higher the chance of getting hyperthyroidism. So if you’re a woman experiencing night sweats, you may want to get your thyroid checked.
Hyperthyroidism occurs when your thyroid gland is overactive and people don’t really notice that they have this condition unless the symptoms get really bad. The symptoms of an overactive thyroid are early graying of hair, depressive episodes, anxiety, infertility or lack of menstruation, thirst and frequent urination, and night sweats.
An overactive thyroid gland means that it’s producing an excess of thyroid hormones causing an imbalance in your system that speeds up your metabolism. This causes too much heat in your body to which it responds to by triggering sweat to cool itself down.
Again, the only solution to secondary hyperhidrosis like excessive sweating caused by hyperthyroidism is to see a doctor, map out a treatment plan, address the condition, get well, and stop the sweating. Using other products (like antiperspirants or sweat-wicking clothes) can only alleviate the symptoms, but if the underlying issue is still present, you will never really stop the sweating.
5. Idiopathic Hyperhidrosis
This is not under secondary hyperhidrosis but I added it as an explanation to “true night sweats” as I promised you I would explain it earlier. True night sweats or idiopathic hyperhidrosis is usually a diagnosis that doctors give when they’ve done all the necessary tests but have come up with no explanation on why you sweat profusely at night.
Idiopathic is a medical term given to any condition to which the cause is unknown. So don’t worry, there are products like clinical antiperspirants that you can use to alleviate all the sweating episodes. Although there is still no cure for primary hyperhidrosis, there are many ways to keep you dry all-day (and all-night).
You might have heard about botox and other surgical procedures but there are other alternatives you can take that are non-invasive and will give you similar results. You may also opt to take medication if the clinical antiperspirants don’t work on you. Don’t lose hope, there’s always a solution to anything.
History of Pillows
Pillows have been giving our head and necks comfort when we sleep, providing the support needed plus the softness that makes you feel like you’re resting your head on the clouds.
The origin of pillows is still unknown. Why were they invented? Who made them? Answers to that may still come in the future but as of now, scientists think that early man did not have pillows and just used their arms while sleeping to support their neck and head.
you can see this behavior among animals in the wild, using their arms or their other companions as “pillows” when sleeping. Science has evidence of the first man-made pillows in Mesopotamia. Dating back 7000BCE, these pillows were made out of stone and were definitely uncomfortable. I read that these were only used by the wealthier citizens to protect their ears from bugs.
In ancient China, they had a similar idea, pillows were not made of stone anymore but were still tough. Only the wealthy could afford them because they were adorned with jewels like jade and other semi-precious stones during that time.
I guess that still wasn’t the most comfortable thing in the world as well but in the present day, collectors go after these pillows as they’re worth millions. It’s now become every antique collector’s dream. Other Asian countries have a history of pillows in their culture.
The Japanese had simpler (and still tough) squares of fabric which they used mainly to support their heavily coiffed hair so they don’t have to redo it the next day as the preparation for their entire outfit would take hours. Keeping their hair styled saved a lot of time.
In the Philippines, during the Spanish era was a unique pillow called the abrazador, which was a long pillow designed to hug at night, abrazar is also a Spanish word which means “to hug”. These pillows are still popular to this date and have different versions, some being a bit narrow and others being called body pillows because they’re wide like normal pillows but are as long as a person.
Nowadays, pillows are used by everybody as we have learned to use proper (and softer) support for both our necks and heads. These pillows we have are usually made up of down, cotton, or microfiber. Newer materials have emerged, such as memory foam, still soft but a bit sturdier than other materials. Below will be a list of different pillows specially designed for people who tend to feel hot at night, be it a form of hyperhidrosis or any other illness that can make one sweat at night.

1. Space Foam Memory Foam Cooling Pillow
As I’ve mentioned, cooling pillows are one of the best inventions ever made on this planet. While I might be overreacting, I think people who have night sweats will agree with me. After all, having this condition constantly disturbs your sleep and these pillows guarantee to fight your sleepless nights with you.
Space Foam Memory Foam Cooling Pillows will do just that because they’re not your ordinary memory foam pillow. Space Foam has this name because they’re light as a feather despite being made up of memory foam. As we all know, memory foam tends to be heavy and too stiff so although it’s been a popular choice for pillows, people with night sweats avoid it as it isn’t as soft as their old pillows.
Their pillows are 75% lighter than the conventional memory foam pillow. They guarantee weightless sleep as you feel as if you’re resting your head in the clouds. Their zero gravity foam is designed in the United States and is currently patent-pending technology. Cool, right?
Light Pillows are always convenient to have at home not because you want a cloud for a pillow but you’d also want something you can bring outside with you. Light pillows are easy to pack for trips out of town, or for camping trips.
Space Foam is one of the best pillows on this list because it knows the problems their customers have with memory foam and decided to improve on their products. They decided to do all the necessary research and develop all the best technology before launching their cooling pillows.
They have different firmness levels on their pillows — they have the soft and medium pillows for back and stomach sleepers and the firm pillow for side sleepers. I prefer medium pillows even for side sleeping so I guess it’s really up to you to select the firmness of your pillow. It’s nice when you have more than one option, right?
They also have two sizes available, Queen and King-sized pillows. If you want a lot of space for your head to rest on, I highly suggest getting their King-sized pillows. These are also the perfect pillows to hug at night since they’re cool and will definitely give you a good night’s rest.
Scared of your pillow losing its shape? Not Space Foam because they have an open airflow breathable technology. This technology makes their foams have a 5x better recovery time than other foam pillows. Recovery time is a way to measure how fast it will return to its original shape. It also helps determine how sturdy your pillow is. Better recovery time means that you won’t have to worry about a misshapen pillow.
What makes it a cooling pillow? Good question. Aside from the foam having breathable technology (which means it doesn’t trap heat), Space Foam has cooling material woven on its cover to give you a cooling sensation when using it. It makes it easier compared to other gel-type pillows in terms of cleaning so I decided to put it at the top of this list.
You may have had to change your sheets and pillowcases multiple times due to your night sweats drenching all your covers but with Space Foam you don’t have to worry anymore. No more piles of laundry! You don’t have to use a pillowcase when using this pillow as their covers are thick and are made to be machine washed. I still recommend handwashing the cover to prolong its lifespan. Always use mild detergent when cleaning your Space Foam pillow.
2. MoMA Gel Memory Foam Pillow
Night sweats is a condition hated by many as it disturbs your sleep because you wake up feeling itchy and sticky, not to mention your drenched pajamas and sheets. You feel so irritated as it’s hard to go back to sleep after going through the motions of taking a bath, changing pajamas, and changing sheets. Imagine doing this daily?
It can get tiring and stressful. Cooling pillows might not sound like a big deal for regular people, but for those who have hyperhidrosis, they may call this a blessing. Cooling pillows are made a little differently than the usual pillows you see at stores because the goal isn’t just to support your head and neck but to provide a cooling sensation that can reduce the likelihood of you sweating buckets.
The MoMA Gel Memory Foam Pillow promises you a cool and comforting night’s rest. This five-inch thick pillow gives the best support by following the contours of your head and neck and the gel padding makes everything feel cool and helps your body during hot flashes or anything that may make you sweat at night.
It receives a high rating from all its customers both offline and online due to its affordable price but I must mention that unlike different brands, MoMA Gel Memory Foam Pillow only has one size, 24 x 16 x 5 inches and is a bit heavier at 7.88 pounds.
Despite the weight, the customers love this pillow and are surprised how this affordable pillow stays cold all night. A lot of their customers are women experiencing menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes and have said that this pillow helps keep them dry, no night sweats!
A disclaimer though, MoMA doesn’t promise that it will stop the sweating entirely. It’s still possible that you might still get sweating episodes. It is important that you don’t fully rely on your cooling pillow and that you still go see your doctor.
Night sweat can also be a sign of an underlying medical issue so addressing it may also address and stop your night sweats. You can also use your cooling pillow as a supplementary tool along with antiperspirants and medication (if prescribed) to stop the sweating. Now let’s go back to cooling pillows.
If you look at the MoMA pillow closely, you’ll see that the gel pad is divided into squares or “grids”, which are intentional so that there is airflow in between the padding which is their secret to staying cool longer than other pillows. It is also reversible so either side will give you cooling comfort.
I love this brand because they provide an affordable option to those who want to get their very own cooling pillows. I love adding affordable options because living with an excessive sweating condition can put a dent in one’s bank account. Getting all the products to avoid sweating episodes are not that cheap.
That said, you should also find something that can be cleaned easily. The MoMA Gel Pillow has easy cleaning instructions, you just have to wipe the gel padding, as for the pillow, a wet cloth can be used to clean out the surface of the pillow. Do not throw the pillow into the wash as you may damage the gel padded side.
You can also put some baking soda on the damp pillow, leave it on for a bit until it dries, then shake off the excess powder. Using a thin pillow cover can protect the pillow from dirt as well. I love this pillow as it is also perfect for people who have lots of allergies because it’s resistant to dirt and dust.
3. MALOUFZ Shredded Gel-Infused Memory Foam Pillow
Memory foam pillows have been the rage these days, often a hot item that gets sold out whether it’s sold online or offline. The reason why a lot of people suffering from hyperhidrosis don’t buy them is that aside from being bulky, there have been lots of people complaining about memory foam being warmer than their regular microfiber pillows.
Memory foam is notorious for trapping in the heat because of the compact structure of the foam, but all the cooling pillows on my list have proper ventilation channels or have added technology mixed with the foam for an overall cooler pillow.
Honestly, warm pillows may not seem like a big issue for most of us, but for people with night sweats, this can be the source of their nightmares. Some doctors say that night sweats can be avoided by reducing the chances of feeling warm at night.
Sweating, as we all know is the body’s way of regulating temperature. The first sign of feeling too warm, sweat comes out. Now imagine that magnified several times. That’s what night sweats are. It’s sweat that drenches your clothes and your sheets. It isn’t comfortable to sweat like a waterfall at night don’t you think?
The theory of some is that there can be triggers to night sweats — from eating spicy food, stress, to warm covers and room temperature, all these can be triggers for a sweating episode. The existence of cooling pillows will eliminate some sweating triggers. These pillows are designed to be soft and comfortable (which is important to get a good 7-8 hours) and have a cooling function either on their surface or embedded in the foam.
Sweating on your sheets and pillow often produce an unpleasant odor in the long run. We all know that these unpleasant odors come from bacteria that love sweat. I highly recommend MALOUFZ Shredded Gel-Infused Memory Foam Pillow because it stops these odors because it has a natural antibacterial outer fabric.
The outer fabric of this pillow is made out of bamboo rayon, which is not only the best and most sustainable fabric out there, but it also naturally bacteria-resistant and cool to the touch. Bamboo rayon is also better than ordinary cotton. But the fabric isn’t the best feature of the Maloufz pillow.
The Maloufz pillow is made up of shredded memory foam. So what makes it special? Well, compared to your regular memory foam which is heavy and can be warm after a while, shredded memory foam has more space to breathe, thus staying cooler than most pillows. It’s also softer and molds better on anything you rest on it, be it your neck or head, or even your hip.
How does shredded memory foam retain its shape? Don’t worry. The brand thought about this problem and created and extra gel dough layer that provides the support your head and neck need when using it. This gel dough also provides extra cooling to the pillow, making it one of the best brands you can buy in the market.
The product has three sizes — travel size, queen size, and king size. The travel size is also good for toddlers and kids. The queen size is ideal for me because it’s not too small nor too big plus you can use it as a pillow you can hug. But if you really toss and turn at night, it’s best to get the king-sized one.
4. PharMeDoc Memory Foam Pillow with Cooling Gel
Tossing and turning at night due to sweating episodes won’t help with your required seven to eight hours of sleep. Going to work is definitely tougher with less sleep and you might end up feeling like a zombie halfway through your workday.
Being sleepless will definitely put you in a bad mood or it might make your brain foggy, both of which don’t seem like a good way to start the day if you ask me. It’s a domino effect of bad things when the lack of sleep occurs. I can now understand why some people going through hot flashes or night sweats can be very irritable. I can’t blame them now, because sleep helps a lot with a person’s overall mood.
Cooling pillows like the PharMeDoc Memory Foam Pillow with Cooling Gel are lifesavers because they help you get your beauty sleep, undisturbed by hot flashes and sweat. I’d get anything that can help me get all my eight hours back if you ask me. Plus the fact that it’s a bonus for me that it has an extra cooling function.
PharMeDoc pillows are a good investment because of the adaptive material it’s made of — memory foam, which follows the shape of your head and neck, giving it enough support. This pillow is on this list because it is really good for side sleepers. I always see good pillows in the market but they don’t give me the support I need when I sleep on my side.
Support is always important when it comes to buying pillows. I mean, what is a good pillow if after a few uses it gets too soft and misshapen? Always remember that memory foam was originally invented as a lightweight foam for the interior of cars and other vehicles. This technology was later on adapted and turned into mattresses and pillows.
Popularly producing pillows for pregnancy and for toddlers, I can be sure that PharMeDoc can definitely provide the comfort we all need. When it comes to cooling pillows, it might seem like a different thing altogether but in my opinion, a company that produces quality pillows will definitely produce the best cooling pillows the market will see.
This brand is (literally) cool on one side for warmer (summer) nights and neutral on the other side for colder nights. This reversible function gives you a choice. If you have hyperhidrosis or if you have night sweats, you’ll probably use the gel-padded side more as you need that extra coldness to stay dry. Customers have always raved about the gel staying cool all-night. This is one of the things I like about PharMeDoc pillows — the quality of their products.
The main problem many people have with cooling pillows is how to clean them. The gel padding of this pillow prevents it from being machine-washable and using the usual pillow cover reduces the coolness of the gel. Guess what? PharMeDoc solves that by giving a free hypoallergenic pillowcase that will protect your pillow but is easy to clean (and is machine-washable).
Always remember that the best way to clean any cooling pillow is to wipe its surface with a damp cloth and to always find a suitable pillowcase to protect it from dirt and dust. You can clean your pillow every week to prevent any buildup and to maintain your pillow’s cleanliness.
5. Tempur-Pedic Cooling Pillow
I always want to have the best pillows on my list, nothing less. this is because I truly value my sleep and I do understand that sleep can be very hard for people with hyperhidrosis. Cooling pillows have been a great solution to this problem (and a cheaper one compared to all the other products), but more often than not these pillows are not what we expect.
Now I have included lots of wonderful brands, but I want this specific one to be special not only because of its history but also because it’s worth every cent you spend. The technology has been there for decades and their current version will just blow your mind. That’s what Tempur-Pedic is as a brand. But wait, there’s more.
Now, let’s start talking about astronauts — wait, what? What does this have to do with cooling pillows, right? Well, let me get there. Believe me, you’d want to hear this story, and this is also an important part of this cooling pillow’s history.
In the 1970s, NASA was doing research on spacecraft padding. They came up and developed a lightweight material that was temperature-sensitive but also distributed body weight evenly across its surface. This padding/foam was used to protect astronauts from any injuries during liftoff as it could be very rough inside the spacecraft itself.
A company in Sweden, Fagerdala and a company from Denmark, Dan-Foam, improved on this technology and together with NASA, was able to release it to the public in 1980. Soon after, these companies merged because they needed the combined manpower as they successfully manufactured and perfected this technology but for mattresses. Lots of people loved these mattresses and they were officially a hit.
This was amazing because it took scientists over a decade of research and development plus the millions of dollars spent on perfecting this invention. These merged companies called themselves TEMPUR and were able to launch their mattress line in 1991. It was an instant success, as they immediately had problems keeping up with the demand. It was sort of a good problem for them during those days.
A decade later, due to the ever-growing demand, TEMPUR decided to branch out to North America, putting up a research and development lab in Duffield, Virginia. They also built a fabrication plant in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Today, there are over 76 countries that use and recommend TEMPUR exclusively because of the quality and comfort their mattresses and pillows give to their customers.
As a certified space technology, you will definitely get the best in purchasing a new Tempur-Pedic Cooling Pillow. Their pillows are superior in comfort and in cooling, and I will share why. Did you know that among all the brands in this list, only Tempur-Pedic has gel pads on both sides?
Yes, both sides. I mean, who doesn’t flip their pillow over at night? I definitely do, and you must do that too at times. They made sure that you’re literally cool on all sides. of their pillows. Tempur-Pedic definitely did their research before launching this product.
Unlike other pillows, you don’t have to get a different type if you sleep on your back, if you sleep on your stomach, or if you’re a side-sleeper. Tempur-Pedic manufactured the best cooling pillow that will adapt to any sleeping position. They also kept it very simple by only having two sizes — queen and King.
Choose your size depending on how fussy you are when sleeping. I’m perfectly fine with a queen-sized pillow, but if you toss and turn a lot, you’ll definitely need the space of a king-sized one. If you like hugging pillows to sleep, I’d suggest getting an extra pillow, perhaps a queen-sized one as it can give you the comfort you need, plus you can even use it to support the back of your knees when you decide to sleep with your legs elevated.
Tempur-Pedic’s technology also helps align your spine when sleeping. Making it convenient for people with a lot of back problems or for people who just want to protect their backs in general. This company also guarantees that your pillow will not lose shape because of how they manufactured their foams.
Last but not least, your Tempur-Pedic Cooling Pillow comes with a quilted cover. It’s made out of quality materials that have the right thickness to protect your pillow but will allow the coolness from the gel to go through it, making sure you have a cool head and a sweat-free sleep. This pillowcase is machine-washable and makes it easier to clean your Tempur-Pedic pillow.
Before we go on to the next brand, here is a short video by The Slumber Yard and their verdict on the Tempur-Pedic cooling pillow:
6. Xtreme Comforts Hypoallergenic Pillow
Night sweats can be a pain because it keeps you up at night, plus it gives you a ton of chores to do. let’s start with the first thing that happens to you. You go to sleep, fresh and in your pajamas — fast forward to a few hours later, you wake up, your face, neck, and chest are sweating like crazy. You find that your pajamas, pillowcase, and sheets are all drenched in your sweat.
Now you go through all the hard work again, you have to get up and remove your sheets, pillowcase, and you have to take a bath again, and change into a new pair of pajamas. All that because of sweat. So the invention of cooling pillows brought a sigh of relief from people who have night sweats.
Xtreme Comforts Hypoallergenic Pillow goes the extra mile when providing your body with the comfort it needs. Aside from being a good memory foam pillow, it’s hypoallergenic, which means that it is resistant to dirt and dust. People who have allergic rhinitis will definitely love their Xtreme Comforts pillows.
No more sneezing episodes or skin allergies caused by dusty foam. I love Xtreme Comforts Hypoallergenic Pillows because of all the pillows in this list, it is the only one that takes into consideration the different body types everyone may have.
The pillow has a built-in inner zipper that can be used to adjust the toughness of your pillow. The pillow is naturally overstuffed so you only have to remove some of the contents and check whether it’s the level of firmness that you want.
Of all the brands you’ll see on this list, Xtreme Comforts is unique because it is the only one that offers four different sizes. It’s usually just two or three sizes per brand but Xtreme Comforts has a standard size, queen size, king size, and body pillow.
The body pillow is my favorite because it is perfect for side sleepers as it is longer than the queen or the king-sized pillows. The standard is a good pillow to buy to bring on trips or for camping, but I wouldn’t use it at home (except for toddlers, I guess) as I find it too small.
The difference between Xtreme Comforts Hypoallergenic Pillow is that it’s interior is not the ordinary shredded memory foam like what other brands use. They have a CertiPUR-US Certified Deluxe Memory Foam which is soft but never loses its shape.
This is the perfect pillow to get if you want to realign your spine, relax your muscles, and promote healthy blood flow when sleeping. I also suggest using your Xtreme Comforts pillow as a knee pillow to help straighten your back even more and it can help relax your leg muscles.
What makes this pillow a cooling one though? It lies in the fabric and the technology it has that gives you a cooling sensation the entire evening. Xtreme Comfort uses Kool-Flow Microvented Technology which is these tiny vents on the surface of the pillow to promote proper airflow.
They also added another cooling feature to the overall design. They used bamboo cotton, which is naturally cooling and antibacterial. You definitely have it all with this cooling pillow.
7. Bluewave Bedding Super Slim Max Cool Gel Memory Foam Pillow
The best solution for night sweats would either be medications, antiperspirants, and even sweat-wicking clothes. Sometimes it may seem so impossible because the sweating never seems to stop, and you keep on getting sleepless nights.
That’s why cooling gel pads, sheets, and now pillows are a miracle to people who have night sweats. This cooling stuff helps combat the body’s faulty body temperature regulators into thinking it’s cooler than usual so it won’t trigger a sweat response. Cool, right? We’ll get to the cooler parts so read more.
I wanted to have a sleek pillow on this list, something light and less bulky than the normal memory foam pillow. Since I love traveling and I love going to places, I figured that I should put something that one can easily bring when going out for camping or any trip for that matter.
So what makes Bluewave Bedding Super Slim Max Cool Gel Memory Foam Pillow different? Well, let me start with stuff that any cooling pillow should have. This brand may not be space technology but it is CertiPUR-US certified. All their foams are certified and patented so you’ll be sure to get only the best.
The sleek design is perfect for people with smaller frames and although it is not the best for side sleepers, it is a good cooling pillow for those who like to lie down on their back or on their stomachs. A solution is to get two of these pillows and stack them together, but most customers are surprised because they didn’t need to do that and were satisfied using only one pillow.
This is because of the overall design of the Bluewave Bedding memory foam pillow. The foam is sturdy without being too tough which provides firm support on your head and neck. What makes it cool though, (literally and figuratively) is that the memory foam is infused with gel particles which helps lower the overall temperature of the pillow.
Another thing that maintains the cool temperature is that there are small ventilation holes all over the foam so that hot air can go out while cool air enters it, and this happens even while you’re using it!
It isn’t called max cool for no reason. Bluewave Bedding Super Slim Max Cool Gel Memory Foam Pillow had a blue cooling layer infused with carbon graphite particles. This layer is called CarbonBlue and compared to the other conventional gel padding on one side, CarbonBlue is lightweight, isn’t bulky at all, and is more cooling in the long run.
Last but not least, Bluewave Beddings makes it easier for you to clean your pillow. Like all memory foam pillows, you can’t throw them in the washing machine. The best solution is to find a good cover that will protect your pillow but won’t cover the cooling function of the pillow.
So they decided to make it easier for you by providing you a removable Tencel cover, which is a type of fabric that was invented in the ’70s and is made of cellulose. This fabric doesn’t trap heat and is resistant to stains.
To clean this pillow, follow the usual steps you take in cleaning anything made out of memory foam, no soaking it as it is very hard to get it to fully dry. Clean your Bluewave Beddings pillow by getting a warm cloth and wiping the surface of the pillow. That easy! The cover definitely makes it easier to clean.
8. Perfect Cloud Dual Option Cooling-Gel Pillow
Have you often wondered what it would feel like to not wake up in the middle of the night because of sweat? I have read a lot of online horror stories on night sweats and I can’t help but feel bad because it can get really really tough at times.
Night sweats can be caused by an underlying medical issue like diabetes, hypoglycemia, menopause or andropause, or even hyperthyroidism. These medical conditions, when addressed, can lessen or even eliminate the sweating episodes. in some rare cases, there might not be any medical condition at all. In those cases, true night sweats or idiopathic hyperhidrosis is diagnosed.
When that happens, you have to be prepared or equipped, as I’d say, because hyperhidrosis still doesn’t have a cure. Don’t worry because this is not a debilitating condition, although it can bring a lot of stress due to the lack of sleep. The good news is that science is evolving constantly and there are many innovations that are constantly launched to help people with hyperhidrosis.
Some of these inventions are sweat-wicking underwear, pajamas, and even tank tops. Others would be extra-strength or clinical strength antiperspirants. Doctors and dermatologists have also come up with antiperspirant wipes that are so effective, you only have to apply it once a day. Other inventions are cooling sheets, mattresses, and now, pillows.
Now that we’re discussing cooling pillows, I’d like to make a recommendation on one of the best brands you can buy in the market. Perfect Cloud Dual Option Cooling-Gel Pillow will definitely never disappoint you in both its quality and in its cooling function.
Your Perfect Cloud Dual Option Cooling-Gel Pillow is scientifically-designed to keep you cool at night through the ventilated memory foam and the quilted gel layer on top of it. You can now sleep through the night sans sweating buckets all over your pillows and sheets.
This brand made sure that their cooling pillows were all tested not only for the cool comfort it brings to anybody using it, but also for the support it gives to the head, neck, and back. It can get pretty tricky when it comes to memory foam pillows — it has to be firm enough to support your body but it can’t be too firm that it can cause tension on your muscles.
This is why you have to read more before making your purchase. Lots of cheap memory foam pillows are being sold both online and offline but I made sure that this entire list only has the best brands, some may be very affordable but I never sacrifice the quality while I was on the hunt.
Perfect Cloud Dual Option Cooling-Gel Pillow has a premium knitted cover with mesh sides to promote cool air coming in and warm air going out. This is their dual ventilation system that is probably why they’re always in-demand.
This knitted cover doesn’t only add to the ventilation but it also helps in making cleaning easier. You can remove the cover and throw it in the wash. For the memory foam and gel pad, just get a damp cloth and wipe the surface. Now you can have a (clean) cooling pillow.

FAQs
1. What makes cooling pillows different from normal pillows?
The huge difference is in the materials used. Most pillows actually trap heat, which can be bad for people experiencing night sweats as the higher temperature can trigger the sweating. Cooling pillows are usually made of cooler materials like memory foam or latex, and some have gel padding that keeps the temperature cool (to at least neutral) all-night long.
2. How do I clean my cooling pillow?
It may seem complicated at first but cleaning a cooling pillow is very easy. You just have to schedule when you clean them so that there will be no build-up of dirt. Start by filling a tub with water, make sure the water isn’t hot but is lukewarm instead.
Use a gentle detergent and add to the water then submerge your pillow gently. You may use a very gently brush to help clean out the dirty areas but make sure not to brush the gel padding too hard or it may break.
Squeeze out the moisture and repeat the procedure (but without the detergent) to rinse the soap out. Then you’re done! Never use a dryer to dry your pillow. Instead, find an area that is well ventilated (or dry it in front of a fan) before putting a pillowcase over it.
3. Will cooling pillows really stop my night sweats?
I’m always honest in all my answers so sadly, cooling pillows won’t stop the night sweats. What it does is keep you cool at night, reducing the “triggers” of the sweating episodes. Some of the triggers include stress, spicy food, and hot room temperature. Adjusting your thermostat and using a cooling pillow is a step you should take to reduce the likelihood of sweating excessively at night.
4. How many cooling pillows should I get?
Get as much as you need to keep cool. I usually need 6 pillows so If you like being surrounded by pillows, get 4 or 5. If you like space, you can get 2 pillows.
5. Do I necessarily need an expensive cooling pillow?
No! Not at all. I included different brands with a wide price range so that you can buy the best pillow that fits your budget. If the budget is not the problem then you can opt to buy the more expensive ones on this list. To be very honest though, it’s all about what works for you. You may find out that the cheapest and most affordable cooling pillow would turn out to be the one for you. You never really know, but try them out, and let me know what you think in the comments below.
6. Why didn’t you recommend down pillows on this list?
Well, although we all know that down pillows are the softest pillows (and quite expensive as well) in the market, they, unfortunately, trap heat which can make your night sweating episodes worse. I always recommend these cooling pillows as they are specifically designed to keep the heat away and have cold gel pads that cool your neck and head instantly.
7. Is there any other alternative to cooling pillows if I still want to use microfiber pillows?
Of course. I must say though, that cooling pillows are still the best product to use if you want a (literal) cool head at night. If you don’t have a cooling pillow or if you’re currently waiting for your order to arrive, you may opt to get cooling gel pads that you can put over your pillow.
These pads work but if you’re using a pillow that traps heat, you may notice that these pads don’t always stay cool for long. This is a great alternative to have as it can be used on different pillows and is useful for people who get severe headaches or migraines.
8. Why is memory foam called by that name?
Memory foam is called memory foam because if you lie down on it, it retains the shape of your head a bit thus a “memory” of your head’s impression. Memory foam is actually (formally) called visco-elastic foam because of its elasticity at different temperatures.
9. Why recommend memory foam pillows? Aren’t they warm to the touch?
Yes, you may be correct in your assessment in memory foam. However, all the pillows in this list are new and improved memory foam technology as they are made with more air pockets thus reducing the temperature. Another fact is that gel pads were added. These cold gel pads make the overall temperature of your memory foam pillow go down, making your sleep a comfortable (and not to mention cool) one.
10. Is memory foam cancerous?
A lot of articles have been coming up on memory foam being toxic and cancerous due to its weird smell. Fortunately, it isn’t cancerous the smell is just really terrible at times, which has been fixed by the manufacturers. Also, I would never recommend anything that can endanger your health. I always make sure to read about the products and the materials used before making my lists.
11. What does a CertiPUR certification mean?
It is actually an important certification for foam companies to have. A CertiPUR certification means that the flexible foam made by a company contains no ozone depleters and can be purchased by the general public as all the materials used in manufacturing the foam is safe and non-carcinogenic.
Thank you for your helpul review. Night sweating is common among people, I got that occasionally, but as it happens like once a year, I am not considering myself being in one of the categories you mentioned. Anyway, I am happy that you named the causes and that you provide real SOLUTIONS here. The pillows look really awesome. I think anyone experiencing sweating during the night on a regular basis, should have a look at them and consider buying them.
No problem. I am happy to help.
